Huy Statement Read to United Nations in Geneva
On October 17, 2023, attorney Summer Blaze Aubrey from the Water Protector Legal Collective (WPLC) read a statement from Huy at a briefing at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
The briefing was in connection with the United Nations Human Rights Committee (HRC) fifth periodic review of the United States’ implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Huy submitted a report for this review, following up on its submission to the HRC ten years ago for the last United States’ review.
We raise our hands to Akilah Kinnison and Vince Redhouse for preparing Huy's report and statement.
This briefing was organized to provide Indigenous Peoples and others an opportunity to make statements outside of the formal HRC processes, and it occurred right before the Committee began its formal review of the United States’ human rights record with regard to ICCPR compliance.
Huy’s issues were also raised in an October 16, 2023 formal briefing, jointly made by representatives of the Indigenous Working Group, which helped to coordinate advocacy efforts on the ground in Geneva for all entities submitting information on behalf of Indigenous Peoples in the United States.
We also raise our hands to Summer and WPLC for making sure that Huy’s issues were prioritized at the United Nations. We will continue to look for additional opportunities to make sure the struggles of our incarcerated relatives are raised at the highest levels.
